Catherine Restrepo is a photographer from Bogotá, Colombia, now based in New Orleans, Louisiana, who documents the material culture of urban environments through a social science lens, capturing spaces in their natural state to reveal real-world environments without any intervention. Currently pursuing a Master of Science in Historic Preservation at Tulane University, her passion for understanding and preserving the past is matched by her adventurous nature as a rescue and nitrox scuba diver. Interested in social sciences, she digs into the complexities of human societies, exploring the intersection of the natural and built environment, human activity, and economic forces—from religious architecture to industrial heritage, from vernacular storefronts to institutional spaces.
Catherine possesses a distinctive perspective on photography and art, viewing it as an expansive sphere with limitless possibilities. She sees all artistic expressions as catalysts of the environment and its interaction with humanity, on an individual and collective level. Through her work, she challenges conventional values, presenting incisive social and political critiques that resonate with the contemporary world.
Photography and photomontage are Catherine's mediums of choice, allowing her to transcend graphic compositions. Skillfully synthesizing these elements, Catherine elevates the mood and infuses psychological depth into her storytelling. Restrepo's visual documentation method combines architectural precision with ethnographic sensitivity. She experiments with old styles and techniques, seamlessly integrating new technologies and careful attention to detail. In doing so, she captures the essence of her subjects, enriching her work with layers of meaning and mystery.
