Catherine Restrepo is a photographer from Bogotá, Colombia, now based in New Orleans, Louisiana. She documents the material culture of urban environments through a social science lens, capturing spaces as they exist to reveal the social, political, and economic forces embedded in everyday life. She holds a Bachelor of Architecture and a Master of Science in Historic Preservation.
With a camera in her hand since she was a child, Restrepo has worked as an illustrator for major publications and international publishers, and in television postproduction. She currently works as an event and commission photographer for academic institutions and private clients.
Her work examines the intersection of built environment, human activity, and economic reality, from vernacular storefronts to industrial sites, from neighborhood churches to institutional spaces. Working primarily in photography and photomontage, Restrepo merges architectural training with ethnographic observation. She experiments with antique photographic processes while integrating contemporary technologies, creating work that operates between documentation and critique.
Restrepo views artistic practice as inseparable from its social and political context. Her work challenges received narratives about urban space, making visible what is ordinarily overlooked or naturalized in the built environment.
